Another Successful Launch

On Friday, May 21st the Pre-Kindergarten class families met at Kline’s Run Park in Long Level, PA for their annual end-of-the-year picnic and boat launch.  All week long, the children have been carefully and joyfully hammering, painting and twiddle-twisting.  Each boat is completely unique and infused with each child’s own special energy and love.

On launch-day, Miss Linda first explained to the children what was to take place; then we all sang a round of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” before we took off.  We followed Miss Linda upstream through cool water and over slippery rocks — at times the water even went over our knee-high boots.  Ms. Karen (Pickarski) helped us make our way while Mr. (Jim) Mull brought up the rear.  We finished by going under the bridge.

Unfortunately, the sides of the creek by the bridge were too muddy to use as an exit and we had to backup.  A few steps back down the creek we found an accommodating exit.  Only a few boats lost their moorings and had to be rescued, but in the end, all were successfully brought to shore.  The children then took their places on the bridge for their Boat Day photo.

We returned to the pavilion for a pot-luck picnic (and dry clothes) where Miss Linda and Mr. Mull were presented with End-of-the-Year gifts.  Our grand adventure ended with long goodbyes and well-wishes until we are to meet again.

SWS Welcomes Wendy Dougherty

On Sunday, May 23, faculty, staff and parents hosted an afternoon tea to welcome Wendy Dougherty as the newest member of our early childhood department.

Wendy will lead the Periwinkle Kindergarten class beginning this September and comes to us with her husband and four children, from the Monadnock, New Hampshire Waldorf School, where she teaches early childhood classes.

With a Masters degree in Waldorf Education and an undergraduate degree in psychology, in addition to her life experiences, and her love for the kindergarten with its artistic and practical work, Wendy brings her whole self to this position with a calm and happy certainty that the Susquehanna Waldorf School is her new ‘home’.

Level 1 Yoga Classes

New to Yoga or Returning to Your Practice?

Level 1 Yoga Classes

at the  Susquehanna Waldorf School

Saturdays 9:30 – 11:00 am

8 Weeks from June 12 – August 7 (June 26 will be skipped)

Join us while we learn and practice some of the primary poses found in the physical practice of hatha yoga.  We will explore the mind/body connection and give ourselves an opportunity to find some balance and inner calmness while building strength and flexibility in our bodies.

Participants should intend to attend the full session to obtain the benefits of the session.

This class will be taught for free and any donation toward the school will be greatly appreciated.  As we will use props to help keep our bodies in proper alignment in the poses, it will be necessary to bring the following supplies: a sticky mat, two 4” yoga blocks, an 8’ or 10’ yoga strap, and a yoga blanket.  If you are starting from scratch, the cost for these supplies approximates $60 (plus tax and shipping) – if there is an interest in purchasing in bulk, we can obtain a discount.

Please contact Heidi Fuerst (hfuerst@hughes.net; (717)515-8419) for a registration form and a list of vendors for the supplies.  Heidi will place a bulk order if there is interest in doing so provided we have enough participants.  Orders must be received by May 31 in order to participate in bulk purchases.

Heidi Fuerst is a parent in Ms. Jackie’s Parent/Child Class and obtained her 200 hour yoga teacher certification in 2007.  She has taught at several yoga studios in the area and hopes to share her love of yoga with others.

Greek Pentathlon

On a very sunny May 13, the fifth-graders of SWS joined fifth-grade students from five other regional Waldorf Schools at Kimberton Waldorf School for the annual Greek Pentathlon.  Divided into Greek city-states, the students competed in the javelin, discus, long jump, sprint, Greek wrestling, and running relay.

The students returned victorious, medals around their necks and sunburn on their noses, and grateful to be part of the wider Waldorf community.  The students and Ms. Miller are also very thankful to Mrs. McIntyre, our seventh-grade teacher, who helped them all year to train for these events.

SWS Library Grows

You ask, What was the result of the Susquehanna Waldorf School new book drive held on March 27 at Barnes & Noble?  A total of 33 NEW BOOKS were donated to the SWS library!  Donor bookplates were found in nearly all of the books and thank you notes have been mailed to those individuals.

But, I have been unable to find an address for book donors David and Julie Zug  Perhaps you know them.  If you do, please thank them for me on behalf of the school or contact me and I’ll thank them myself.
And, for the donor who anonymously left two new books on the library desk, my gratitude is invisibly winging your way.

Thank you, one and all!

–Christy Hoover, SWS Volunteer Librarian
