Help CelebrateMarietta's Bicentennial
Dear SWS Parents,
Our beautiful school building is located in historic Marietta and on March 3, 2012 the borough of Marietta, Pennsylvania will celebrate its Bi-Centennial – hurray!
The Marietta Restoration Associates has formed a Sub-Committee to plan the celebration events: the Marietta Bi-Centennial Committee (MBC, as I will call it).
Marietta is actually a very happening place; there are events happening all year ’round – every year – and the MBC has decided to take advantage of that fact. The MBC will have a presence (volunteers in period costumes, souvenirs, etc) at many of Marietta’s venues during the 2012 year (Market, Marietta Day, Fireman’s Week, July Carnival, Art Auction, Pig Iron Fest, Candlelight Tour, etc.) There are several events, however, that the MBC will be sponsoring and/or have asked local groups to sponsor specifically for the BiCentennial (New Year’s Eve kick-off, BiCentennial Ball, Community Picnic with Children and Pets Costume Parade, December Cantata).
SWS and the Marietta Lion’s Club will be co-sponsoring the New Year’s Eve kick-off on December 31, 2011. It will be in the SWS gym from 8PM – 12 midnight. Several local artisans will create ice sculptures and display them on the lawn behind the museum. (There’ll be a cash prize for 1st and 2nd place.) We’ll have children’s activities in the gym as well as some light refreshments. We’re planning to have sparkling cider for a midnight toast; volunteer musicians performing, and then at midnight the Lion’s Club will drop (cautiously and carefully) a Pig Iron from the Clock Tower. Our slogan is “Iron’s Hot, Ice’s Cold”.
As you can imagine, this is a large undertaking and volunteers are needed. If you are interested in volunteering (in any capacity) to help with the New Year’s Eve Kick-Off or at any of the other Bi-Centennial events, please contact Laura Gruno (717 330 8010) or Maria Wherley (717 426-4506 x224).
This is an opportunity to help showcase the school as a viable and integral part of the local community. Please consider volunteering in even the smallest way. Thank you.
